I’m about to buy an air purifier — the Bosch Air 4000i (affiliate link). Sounds unremarkable — and it would be, if not for a small note on the packaging: Matter over Thread or Matter over Wi-Fi.

There I stood. A device I consciously want to buy because it supports Matter — and I realized I actually had no idea what that concretely means. Matter has been part of smart home discussions for three years now. Three years. I’d kept catching glimpses of it, kept setting it aside. Probably not that important. Zigbee works just fine.
